Protect Yourself & Protect Khumbu

For Those planning to visit the beautiful Khumbu Valley, this is not just a trekking destination- It is our Home.

As someone who has been running a family lodge here for the past eight years, I want to share something important. There have been growing concerns around helicopter scams and unnecessary helicopter use in the region. While helicopters are essential in real emergencies, their misuse is harming both trekkers and our fragile mountain environment.

How to Stay safe from Helicopter Scams

  • Do not rush in to evacuation decisions: Some cases involve pressure to take a helicopter even when it’s not medically necessary. Always seek a second opinion if possible.
  • Travel with trusted agencies: Choose reputable trekking companies with transparent policies.
  • Understand your insurance: Know exactly what your policy covers-especially evacuation rules.
  • Stay Calm and informed: Mild altitude sickness is common and often manageable with rest and proper acclimatization.

Why this Matters

Unnecessary helicopter flights are increasing every year in Khumbu. This has serious consequences:

  • Respect the natural rhythm of the mountains
  • Acclimatize properly instead of rushing
  • Choose walking over flying unless absolutely necessary
  • Support local businesses that promote sustainable tourism

Khumbu has given unforgettable experiences to trekkers from around the World. Now we ask you to help protect it.
